Layin the garden beds

So to plant the squash and zucchini we had to raise the bed and then mound up the earth where we planted each plant. We then laid newspaper and mulch to hold moisture and keep weeds out.

A hug for my helper in the garden today. He did a GREAT job.

Spinach + zucchini

Here's the spinach (foreground of pic)  and zucchini (at top of pic). 18 zucchini and about 50 spinach.

Garden planted!..well halfway

Got yellow squash, zucchini, and spinach planted in ground of garden today. Dane helped a bunch to get all this done. Still need to decide how we'll water, we've tried automatic timer, drip, soaker hoses and honestly, each of them have there advantages but they aren't consistent. So this year I think we will hand water. This will allow us to keep a daily eye on how everything is growing and will help minimize the water usage and any snaafus that could happen with watering system.

This is a good site for basic info about mesquite trees, and two kinds ofbwhich I'm pretty sure we have on the property: honey mesquite and screwball mesquite. The both of these can be used for various degrees of food/cooking and of course firewood. Did you know mesquite wood is smokeless... and tasty to cook with.

Honey mesquite brings bees-which we all need for gardening!

The ground up mesquite bean is great for treating diabetes.
