Snow peas

I planted 3-4 plants in each container. So far so good. They've been in these containers for 1 week.

Garden

Panned a little right to get pic of rest of garden. Mulched areas are the ones that have small plants in them.

Yellow squash plant

Here's pic of yellow squash. Been in garden for about 4 weeks and growing very well so far.

Snow peas containers

Pic of containers for snow peas. Again decided to use fencing inside bucket for support for plant b/c it tends to vine and cling onto fence for support. I really hope this method works for snow pea and the tomatoes. We are hand watering with rain water to conserve water and to be deliberate about where we water so as to minimize weeds. Hoping mulch will help to minimize weeds as well.

Tomatoe plant

Pic of small tomatoe plant in our container.

Garden helper

She helped me plant asian greens and snow peas.

Tomatoe plant

Took pic of tomatoe plant today. Been in containers for 1 week. Doing ok but may have put them in garden too soon. I'll need to watch them closely to see if they need to be moved into partial shade. They are in spot of direct sun for most of day.

Yellow squash beds

3 beds of yellow squash.

Garden

Pic of garden.

Zucchini plant

Pic of zucchini plant. In ground for 4 wks-doing well so far.

Tomatoe plant containers

We decided to try this method for growing tomatoes. We put fencing inside buckets, filled them with dirt, and then planted 3-4 tomatoe plants in each container. The fencing will offer support for plant as it grows and fruits.

Baby TC Missing

TC has been missing since yesterday morning.  Last night coyotes were closer than normal fired a couple warning shots in the evening when we heard them.  Also tightened some loose fencing.   We need a good flock guard.

Preppin'

Layin the garden beds

So to plant the squash and zucchini we had to raise the bed and then mound up the earth where we planted each plant. We then laid newspaper and mulch to hold moisture and keep weeds out.

Kissee face

...had to plant a kiss too...

Hug

A hug for my helper in the garden today. He did a GREAT job.

Spinach + zucchini

Here's the spinach (foreground of pic)  and zucchini (at top of pic). 18 zucchini and about 50 spinach.

Garden planted!..well halfway

Got yellow squash, zucchini, and spinach planted in ground of garden today. Dane helped a bunch to get all this done. Still need to decide how we'll water, we've tried automatic timer, drip, soaker hoses and honestly, each of them have there advantages but they aren't consistent. So this year I think we will hand water. This will allow us to keep a daily eye on how everything is growing and will help minimize the water usage and any snaafus that could happen with watering system.

Mesquite tree - Honey, Screwbean, Velvet Mesquites - DesertUSA

http://www.desertusa.com/jan97/du-smesquite.html

This is a good site for basic info about mesquite trees, and two kinds ofbwhich I'm pretty sure we have on the property: honey mesquite and screwball mesquite. The both of these can be used for various degrees of food/cooking and of course firewood. Did you know mesquite wood is smokeless... and tasty to cook with.

Honey mesquite brings bees-which we all need for gardening!

The ground up mesquite bean is great for treating diabetes.

2012 garden has begun...

Here's what has sprouted so far in greenhouse. Yellow squash, zucchini, and spinach. Next step: transplant into garden!

Additional garden plantings

Since it was chilly and rainy today and we couldn't work outside in the garden, I started some more seedlings in the greenhouse. Planted manzano tomatos, black beauty eggplant, jalapeno peppers, snow peas, asian tender greens, and swiss chard--all YUM!

Rainy day....

Kahlua has the right idea...this is all this rainy day Saturday is good for...
